I built matrixrrefsolver.com because every RREF calculator I found had the same problem: they showed you the reduced matrix and stopped there.
That is precisely where you need the most help. Reading a pivot column, identifying free variables, writing x₁ = 3 − 2t from what the matrix is telling you is the step most tools skip entirely.
This site does not skip it.
What this calculator does differently
Every matrix you reduce here comes with a full solution readout. If the system has a unique solution, you see x₁ = 2, x₂ = 3, x₃ = −1 written out directly.
If it has infinitely many solutions, you see the parametric form with free variables clearly labelled. If it has no solution, you see which row caused the contradiction and why.
The calculator also shows row reduction as two distinct stages. The toggle “Show REF to RREF steps” lets you see exactly where forward elimination ends and back-substitution begins. It’s exactly the way most linear algebra courses teach it.
Other things the calculator handles that most tools do not:
- Exact fraction arithmetic throughout. There are no rounding errors in intermediate steps
- Matrices up to 8×8, including non-square
- A dedicated System Ax = b mode where you enter the coefficient matrix and constants separately
- LaTeX copy for students submitting homework in Overleaf
- A TI-84 key sequence reference for students working alongside a graphing calculator
